This new Vertigo Sound VSM-3 native plugin from Plugin Alliance will change your life.... I use the hardware version on my stereo bus on practically every mix.
One of the best compressors I've heard, period. The way it responds to an incoming signal and shapes dynamics removes any doubt about whether a plugin can sound as good or better than hardware. I use this extensively in my mixing and mastering sessions because it's dependable, has great flexibility with the non-linear 'soft' setting ratio and it's not uncommon that I will daisy chain a couple of these or run it in parallel to add weight to my mixes. A swiss-army knife of a unit, you need to try it out, the results will speak for themselves.
